Frequently Asked Questions
There are many concerns people have with dentures, please find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions below.
What is a denture?
A denture is a removable appliance for the replacement of missing teeth and adjacent tissues. It is made of special acrylic and sometimes in combination with various metals or porcelains. Complete dentures replace all the extracted natural teeth. while a partial denture fills in only the spaces created by missing natural teeth and prevents other teeth from changing position.
What is an immediate denture?
Suppose, for instance, that you have eight remaining upper teeth. These teeth are, unfortunately, poor and can not be utilized in any way to support a new denture. If you were to have a traditional denture made, it would be necessary to have all of these teeth extracted first, the bone and gums would have to heal and then a denture could be fabricated. This process could take several months, if not longer, and for that time period you would have to go around with out any teeth. In order to avoid this type of problem, we utilize an Immediate Denture technique. This involves taking impressions of your mouth while your natural teeth are still present. At the same time, when your teeth are extracted, we have a denture ready to be inserted. In this way, you never have to walk around without.
How do you care for a denture?
A denture is fragile, so it is important to handle it with care. Remove and brush the denture daily, preferably with a brush designed specifically for cleaning dentures. Never use harsh, abrasive cleansers, including toothpaste that is made for natural teeth because they may scratch the surface of the denture. Don’t sterilize your denture with boiling water because it will cause it to warp. If you wear a partial denture be sure to remove it before brushing your natural teeth.
Should a denture be worn at night?
Wear your new denture almost constantly during the first month – even while you sleep. Afterwards under normal circumstances it is considered best to remove it at night. Research has shown that removing the denture for at least four (4) hours during either the day or night allows the gum tissue to rest and allows normal stimulation and cleansing by the tongue and saliva. This promotes better long-term health of the gums and reduced bone loss.
What is a reline?
A reline is when the Denturist takes an impression of your mouth using your current denture and takes it back to his laboratory. There he removes the interior structure of the denture and bonds a new layer of denture material to the inside of the denture. This new layer of denture material is form fitted to your mouth to help improve your denture, and overall fit. The new material that is placed in your denture does not change the appearance of your denture on the outside, but helps to maintain a healthy bite, strong chewing forces in your jaws, and a healthy smile. Speech irregularities may be improved for better communication skills.
What are some indicators that a denture needs to be relined?
Excessive weight loss or recent extractions cause shrinkage of bone and gum tissue. A reline will result in a better fitting denture that lost its retention. Denture adhesives are not recommended because prolonged use can mask infections and cause bone loss in the jaw. Likewise, a poorly fitting denture, which causes constant irritation over a long period, may contribute to the development of sores and tumors. If your dentures begin to feel loose or cause pronounced discomfort, see your denturist immediately.
How long does it take to have my denture relined or repaired?
Advances in modern techniques make it possible for a denturist to reline or repair dentures quickly right in the office and on the same day.
Is it true that ill-fitting dentures can be contributing to other health problems?
Yes, they can be aggravating other health problems such as chronic bad breath, sore spots, jaw pain, speech difficulties and a host of dietary problems.
